West Tampa History | Fishing

West Tampa is a older part of the city and was established in 1892.

West Tampa’s historic roots are derived from Hugh MacFarlane who was a Scottish immigrant. He first purchased some land in the West Tampa area to try and get some cigar factories that were located in Ybor City to come over and build with him. When he finally did get one cigar factory it was closed down for a short time because the workers didn’t want to get on a ferry to ride up the Hillsborough River to the factories location. He than decided he would build a bridge and a street car, after he did this West Tampa began to explode in population.

Old West Tampa is also part of West Tampa

Inside both of these areas you will find tons of hot spot for visiting and club hoping. The fishing spots in the West Tampa area are the Hillsborough River which is a fresh water river, but West Tampa being so close to Tampa Bay’s Bay it is brackish water and you can catch saltwater species fish. I my self have caught some Snook from the Hillsborough River. I have also seen some really big alligators in the Hillsborough River, so make sure you are keeping an eye out!
